Methods Of Hypnosis

posted by John Woellner

Hypnosis has different methods of imparting suggestions to an individual. To be able to achieve that state where we are susceptible to suggestions, there has to be an effort and belief in our part to accept this method.

Traditional Hypnosis

Traditional hypnosis usually uses a soothing voice to communicate to the subject. The subject or individual is lulled into a relaxed state and then suggestions are tried out on the subject to assess the state he is in. This is more common for hypnosis tapes and CDs where individuals are lead into a state of hypnosis. Hypnosis for the sake of entertainment falls under this category also.

The problem with this kind of hypnosis is that there has to be belief and acceptance on the part of the subject to be able to reach hypnosis. People who are doubtful or who think too much regarding the procedure may not be able to undergo hypnosis due to this. Willingness to be hypnotized as well as following instructions of the hypnotist are factors that are necessary to undergo hypnosis.

For traditional hypnosis, suggestions are directly imparted by the hypnotists onto their subjects. If the subject is unwilling to do the suggestion, then there is a chance of the subject declining or rejecting it. These suggestions usually do not go against the morals and principles of the subject because he has the capacity to reject the suggestions if he feels that he can not do it. Otherwise, suggestions that are simple, despite being silly, can be done by the participant.

Ericksonian Hypnosis

The Ericksonian hypnosis method is an indirect way of broaching suggestion to subjects. People seldom recognize the fact that they are being hypnotized with the Ericksonian method because the hypnosis is brought about through stories or metaphors that are introduced to the subject in a very natural way. This natural way is through a natural sounding conversation. In spite of this natural sounding conversation, there may be different pitches and inflections used in the conversation to emphasize certain words and phrases. Subjects do not usually notice the different tones and inflections used by the hypnotist.

The Ericksonian method of hypnosis explores subliminal messages that are implanted on people. The frequency and regularity of the suggestions through conversation can actually alter the person's perspective eventually. Even as the subject is placed under the state of hypnosis, the way that he is placed here is through a suggestion which is given by the hypnotist. Hypnotists usually use positive reinforcement to achieve their goals in the Ericksonian method of hypnosis. Suggestions are given as possibilities which make the subject more accepting of them.

This method of hypnosis is sort of subliminal in a way that the conversation may have a deeper meaning that the subject may or may not understand. The important thing is that the subject has listened to the story or the conversation and the gist of the story has been implanted unto the subject. Sometimes, the conversation will not focus on the problem of the individual but more on topics which may affect the individual to think that he can do something about his problem.

These two different methods of hypnosis are quite different from each other but may have the same results if done successfully. The former method is more direct and traditional while the latter has a more subtle approach that leaves the individual just as relaxed. Both methods requires skill in different aspects.
